Question 1

Does eSIM bypass China's firewall (the Great Firewall)?

Accepted Answer

Yes, an international roaming eSIM (not a local Chinese SIM) automatically bypasses the firewall. The phone connects to China's towers, but the data travels through a foreign network where nothing is blocked, so Google, WhatsApp and Instagram work without any VPN. This applies only to an eSIM or roaming; a local Chinese SIM or hotel Wi-Fi will still be filtered.

Question 2

Will Google, WhatsApp and Instagram work in China with an eSIM?

Accepted Answer

Yes, using an international (foreign) eSIM rather than a local Chinese SIM, Google, WhatsApp and Instagram will work without any VPN, because the data travels through a foreign network that China's firewall does not filter.

Question 3

Do I need a VPN in China if I have an eSIM?

Accepted Answer

No; if you use only a phone with an eSIM, the roaming data bypasses the firewall anyway. A VPN may only be needed if you connect to local Wi-Fi (in a hotel or cafe) or use another device (a laptop) without eSIM data.

Question 4

Which eSIM is best for China?

Accepted Answer

For China you need an international roaming eSIM, not a local one, so that Google, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram work automatically without a VPN. SimAbove ensures this.

Question 5

With an eSIM in China, can you make calls?

Accepted Answer

Usually no; as in most countries, tourist eSIMs, including SimAbove's, for China are generally for mobile data only, with no voice calls or SMS. For calls it is best to use internet calling.

Question 6

Does eSIM work on China's high-speed trains?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it usually works well. China's high-speed rail has wide mobile network coverage along the entire route, including tunnels.

Question 7

Can I use YouTube and Gmail with an eSIM in China?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can.

Question 8

What happens if the data package runs out during a trip around China?

Accepted Answer

The internet connection simply stops until you buy a top-up package through the provider's app. What is important is that as long as you have at least a minimal roaming connection through the eSIM, you can easily top up the plan; however, if the data has completely run out, you will need Wi-Fi, and local Chinese Wi-Fi will already be filtered by the firewall, so Google / WhatsApp / Gmail will not work until you top up the eSIM and return to the roaming connection. For this reason it is advisable to play it safe and buy a sufficient data plan for your trip right away.

Question 9

How much data do you need for a one-week trip to China?

Accepted Answer

It depends on usage, but usually for average use (maps, messaging, WeChat, sharing photos, occasional Google / YouTube), 5–8 GB is enough for a week. If you plan to use navigation frequently, make video calls or watch videos, it is worth choosing 10–15 GB so that you do not run short.
